The Cairo Angels is Egypt's first formal network of angel investors and is located in Cairo, Egypt with a standalone chapter in London, UK. The Cairo Angels invests in and supports start-ups and early stage, high growth businesses across the Middle East and Africa.
Identifying the need for early-stage investments in the blossoming entrepreneurship scene in Egypt, a group of likeminded investors, professionals, entrepreneurs and business leaders formed the regions first angel network in early 2012. The network has since grown to more than 50 members with a standalone chapter in London, UK. Since its inception in early 2012, the Cairo Angels has invested more than $2.5 million in 21 start-ups across the region with binding offers being made on a quarterly basis.
The Cairo Angels' focus is on early-stage, high growth potential and highly scalable companies across all sectors that have a developed product and are post-revenue or near monetization. Each of the Cairo Angels’ members makes his or her individual investment decision — but the network collaborates in due diligence. Collectively, the Cairo Angels’ members make equity investments in the range of EGP 250,000 to EGP 2 million per investment and can syndicate larger investments with its partner organizations, such as MAIN.
Cairo Angels convenes regular pitch events to review pre-selected potential investees that meet the Cairo Angels investment criteria. Meetings are open to members and invited guests only. Afterwards, interested angels are invited to collectively engage directly with the entrepreneurs to carry out due diligence, negotiate investment terms and finalize the legal documentation. Angels invest their personal money, in return for a minority equity stake in the business.
